Role Overview
We are looking for Legal Associates who are sharp, proactive, and eager to grow within a fast-moving EdTech and AI startup environment. You will work closely with the Legal Manager and business teams on contracts, IP protection, data privacy compliance, and dispute management. This is a high-ownership role for someone who thinks beyond textbook law and thrives with real responsibility from day one.
Key Responsibilities
- Intellectual Property & Trademark: Assist in filing and management of trademarks, copyrights, and domain-related matters for GKL’s brands, content, and technology assets. Monitor and respond to IP infringement instances — including content piracy, brand misuse, and unauthorized use of GKL’s proprietary educational materials and AI tools. Support in drafting IP assignment agreements, licensing arrangements, and creator/content agreements. Maintain and update GKL’s IP register and renewal calendar.
- Data Protection & Privacy (DPDPA): Assist in ensuring compliance with India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act (DPDPA) 2023 — including consent mechanisms, data principal rights, and grievance redressal processes. Support in maintaining and updating privacy policies, terms of service, cookie policies, and data processing agreements. Coordinate with product and tech teams on data handling practices, user data flows, and vendor DPAs.
- Contract Drafting & Management: Draft, review, and negotiate commercial contracts including vendor agreements, SaaS agreements, content licensing, influencer/creator contracts, affiliate agreements, and NDAs. Maintain a well-organized contract repository with tracking of renewals, expiry dates, and key obligations. Develop and update standardized contract templates to support recurring business requirements.
- Litigation & Dispute Support: Assist in managing consumer complaints, legal notices, and dispute resolution matters. Prepare case summaries, coordinate with external counsel, and track court or tribunal hearing schedules. Draft legal replies, demand letters, and internal legal notes as required. Maintain dispute logs and support pre-litigation risk assessments.
- Regulatory & General Compliance: Track and flag regulatory developments relevant to EdTech, AI, D2C, and digital businesses in India. Support compliance under the IT Act, Consumer Protection Act (e-commerce rules), and POSH Act. Assist in statutory registers, filings, and basic corporate secretarial matters.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- LL.B. from a recognized institution; LL.M. or specialization in IP or technology law is a plus.
- 1 to 3 years of experience in a law firm, in-house legal team, or startup legal role.
- Strong working knowledge of IP laws, DPDPA/data privacy, contract drafting, and litigation support.
- Prior exposure to EdTech, SaaS, D2C, or AI-driven companies is a strong plus.
- Sharp drafting skills with an eye for detail and commercial awareness.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-growth environment with evolving priorities.
- Proactive, ownership-driven mindset — someone who finds solutions, not just problems.
What We Offer
- Front-row seat at a fast-scaling, AI-focused EdTech company with genuine legal complexity.
- High ownership from day one — not a back-office support role.
- Direct mentorship from the Legal Manager and senior leadership.
- Competitive compensation based on experience.
- Collaborative, intellectually stimulating work environment with real growth potential.
