About the Organization and Team
The Wealth Management (WM) Chief Data Office (CDO) sits within the WM Risk organization and strives to find the right balance between risk management and business enablement. WM CDO’s mission is to:
- prevent unauthorized access to or misuse of client sensitive data and assets;
- abide by relevant privacy laws and regulations;
- effectively retain, retrieve, and protect information and records;
- mitigate risks caused by inaccurate, untimely, or incomplete WM data.
The Fraud Risk Team within WM CDO works to define appropriate fraud risk thresholds for WM and govern controls that keep net external fraud losses within tolerance while achieving business objectives.
About the Role
The WM Fraud Risk Team seeks an experienced professional to support efforts in the development of fraud mitigation controls for the purchase, sale, or transfer of cryptocurrencies. This individual will assess and document scenarios that pose significant cryptocurrency fraud risk to Morgan Stanley and our clients. Each scenario will be researched and evaluated to apply appropriate controls that sufficiently mitigate risks and are in line with industry standards. They will also be responsible for responding to fraud incidents involving cryptocurrencies and highlighting any deficiencies through an after-action report.
Responsibilities
- Performing end-to-end risk assessments of platforms, including Morgan Stanley Online and E*TRADE, to document existing controls and prescribe control recommendations to prevent cryptocurrency fraud
- Supporting platforms, product, technology, cyber, and fraud teams to ensure cryptocurrency fraud controls are effectively designed to prevent cryptocurrency fraud
- Identifying, measuring, mitigating, and reporting on cryptocurrency fraud attempts, successes, and trends against all platforms and cryptocurrency products
- Providing status reports to senior management, auditors, and regulators
- Performing ad hoc analyses and participating in special projects as needed by management
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required
- 7-10 years of relevant experience in a risk, control improvement, or assurance function, preferably in the financial services industry
- Fundamental understanding of cryptocurrency and blockchain technologies
- Experience with specific cryptocurrencies, their respective uses, and risk profiles
- Cognizance of emerging financial regulations related to cryptocurrency
- Comfort challenging and escalating risks and decisions
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate at all levels within the organization
- Exceptional critical thinking, problem-solving, and research skills
- Ability to independently manage and execute on multiple, simultaneous workstreams and exhibit strong attention to detail
- Expertise in office productivity software, data analysis, and collaboration tools
Preferred Skills
- Understanding of the fraud risk landscape and experience using fraud actor tools, techniques, and practices to inform strategy
- Experience with digital asset and stablecoin infrastructure platform Fireblocks
- Knowledge of the financial services industry; preferably in wealth management, finance, operations, or technology
- Familiarity with visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Dataiku)
